Spent a weekend at BlogHer in San Jose, meeting many cool people and having great conversations with Liz, among others. Had the great fortune to meet kt of the department who took an amazing photo of my paint box as I worked. BlogHer left me full of energy and with lots of interesting sites to visit. This is an amalgamation of anticipated landscapes, and recent ones experienced…a little bit of the bridge, annisquam and Bush Lake.

Caught this out of the corner of my eye while driving over the bay bridge, back into the city. I was struck by the odd juxtaposition of solitude and connectivity.

This hibiscus was in full bloom last august. It began a downward spiral (largely due to my neglect) in the fall and winter–culminating in a 20 foot fall from our porch onto the patio during a windstorm. We were away at the time and came home to a sad heap on the ground. My husband repotted it, and all the leaves promptly fell off–but then, little by little it has started to bloom. Despite its pathetic appearance, I leave it out, and feel inspired by it unwillingness to give up. There’s a good lesson in that.

I woke up on sunday and realized that I had FORGOTTEN to draw on saturday! Yikes! Here are my two drawings to make up for the skipped day. We went down to Pacifica to escape the heat in the city–the weather was cool but the beach was too crowded. I spent my time looking at my kids play and staring at the cliffs.

One of my art school teachers insisted we draw from our paintings, and then paint from the drawings as a way of expanding our “vocabulary”. It creates an interesting conversation between transparant and opaque, big and small, brush and crayon.
